Olympic Aquatic Center
Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, Georgia
This 15,000-seat natatorium was integrated with the existing Student Athletic Complex (SAC) at the Georgia Institute of Technology for the 1996 Summer Olympic Games in Atlanta. The facility included competition swimming and diving facilities, locker rooms, 2,000 permanent seats and 13,000 temporary seats plus a temporary water polo pool with 4,000 seats. The sweeping, clear-span roof design above the pool created an "open air" facility while protecting those underneath. The curved steel "wave" roof is countered by an inverted steel bowstring truss intended to cover temporary Olympic event seating. A landscaped plaza and food court provide an attractive venue that helped with pedestrian circulation without compromising security.
