Alvin Sherman Library, Research & Information Technology Center

Nova Southeastern University | Fort Lauderdale, Florida

Research and Information Technology Center

This five-story, 325,000 SF library, home to over one million volumes for both the University and Broward County, consists of twenty electronic classrooms, a 500-seat performing arts theater, and several exhibit spaces. The project includes an adjacent four-story, 1,525-vehicle parking structure that has separate public and university components. The facility is unique among university libraries in its private/public ownership and operation.

The facility was designed to complement the existing architecture of the Nova Southeastern campus. The site occupies a central location on campus, across the campus lake from the Horvitz Administration Center and near the expanded Mailman Segal Family Center and the future site of Nova’s business school. The entry colonnade and “punched” window patterns are classically inspired as are the rusticated precast concrete walls.

The entry lobby leads to a centrally situated reference desk with computerized research stations and the children’s library at the periphery. The lobby provides direct access to the atrium and stairs and elevators at the center of the facility. This five-story feature provides a naturally lighted, vibrant, open courtyard space for gatherings of students, faculty and the general public.

SRSS also provided master planning services for this project. To learn more about this practice area, please click the link above.

"This is a research and high-tech library like none other. The library of tomorrow has arrived, and everyone at NSU and in the county will benefit."
